Greenway wary of Australia backlash

Lydia Greenway was player of the match for her game-defining 39 not out at Adelaide

Lydia Greenway insists England women must not rest on their laurels after they defeated Australia in the first Twenty20 international at Adelaide.

Greenway struck a composed unbeaten 39 as the tourists established an early advantage in the five-match series with a four-wicket victory yesterday.

But she insists there is no chance of complacency creeping in ahead of tomorrow’s second match at the MCG, where they will once again play before their male counterparts.

“I think the Australians are going to come back at us much harder,” she told ecb.co.uk/video. “They are a very good team and I don’t think they will be happy that they lost that first game.

“I’m really pleased that we got off to a good start, but we’ve still got areas that we need to improve on.

“There are four games to go and it would be nice to perform well in Melbourne.”

Laura Marsh

Laura Marsh gets England going. "We've spoken about keeping up with the rate and not worrying about wickets," said Greenway

Greenway admits England are keen to make an impression in the game’s shortest format after suffering disappointment in last year’s World Twenty20.

Mark Lane’s side failed to make it through the group stage in the Caribbean, with Australia eventually emerging victorious in the final against New Zealand.

“I’ve said before that a few of us are scarred by that, not even making the semi-finals,” Greenway added.

“As a group of players we just want to keep on improving and get ourselves back up there.”

England can certainly take confidence from their performance with the bat in Adelaide, which saw them display plenty of aggressive intent throughout.

“We’ve always spoken about keeping up with the rate and not really worrying too much about wickets and that’s what Charlotte (Edwards) and Laura (Marsh) did at the beginning,” explained Greenway.

“I think we got 13 off the first over, so straightaway we were up with the rate.

“Laney had spoken to me about maybe guiding us through but we were still chasing seven and eight (runs per over) so I had to be as positive as I could be.

“Suzie Rowe did a really good job coming in there and hitting a big six. It was good that all the girls coming in knew exactly what they were doing and it was a great win.”
