England women’s player, Ebony Rainford-Brent was named as the UCL Sportswoman of the Year at the annual awards ceremony held at Lord’s on Tuesday March 20.

Rainford-Brent, the first black woman to ever play for England, made her international debut on the recent tour of India, where England finished third in a quadrangular series against the top four teams in the women’s game.

The all-rounder, who plays her county cricket for Surrey, has recently come back from a severe back injury to live her dream of playing international cricket.

She underwent years of physiotherapy and has defied the odds after doctors warned her she would never play sport again.

The 23 year-old student, who is studying for a Masters in chemistry at the university, said: “I’m delighted and amazed to have won this award. I feel honoured to have even been nominated.

"It’s been hard work getting this far, but it has definitely been worth it and I’ll continue to work hard in the future.”
