T20 setback for England women's academy

England women’s academy lost the first of three Twenty20 games in as many days with the senior South Africa side at Potchefstroom by nine wickets.

Having snuck a notable win on Tuesday to avoid a 3-0 50-over whitewash, the tourists met determined opponents today.

Alice MacLeod and Amy Jones lifted the academy, who opted to bat first, from 56 for six after 11 overs to 114 without further loss from 20.

Trisha Chetty

Trisha Chetty was undefeated on 38 as South Africa comfortably surpassed England women's academy's 117 with 17 balls to spare

However, the hosts overhauled that with 17 balls to spare - Shandre Fritz racing to 37 from 22 deliveries and opening partner Trisha Chetty ending unbeaten on 38.

The first four wickets were lbw decisions with two for Marizanne Kapp, including Tammy Beaumont whose 16 came in fours.

Worse followed when opener Danni Wyatt was run out by Yolandi van der Westhuizen for 17 and Dane van Niekerk had Jodie Dibble stumped for her second scalp.

MacLeod and Jones rallied with two fours each en route to 33 and 27 respectively, both from 29 balls.

In reply, Fritz and Chetty raced out of the blocks, adding 63 in seven overs until Wyatt had the former caught behind having hit seven fours.

Chetty joined forces with Susan Benade, who took her time in making 24 from 41 deliveries.
