Shandre Fritz struck an unbeaten 53 to ensure England women’s academy fell to a T20 series defeat against South Africa's women's seniors

The women’s academy, who lost the 50-over rubber by the same scoreline, headed into the encounter brimming with confidence after emerging victorious yesterday.

But they were put on the back foot from the start as opener Fritz got South Africa - who won the toss - off to a flying start.

She put on 67 in just 7.1 overs with Trisha Chetty, who eventually fell to Beth MacGregor for a 26-ball 32.

Susan Benade struck 22 to keep South Africa motoring, with her dismissal - she was bowled by Kate Cross - merely heralding more fireworks.

Chloe Tryon joined forces with Fritz, and the duo found the boundary with ease thereafter as the former, in particular, thrived.

She would eventually fall for a 23-ball 40, but her efforts - combined with Fritz’s unbeaten 53 - saw South Africa to a commanding 178 for three.

The run-chase was undermined by the women’s academy losing wickets at regular intervals; they slipped to 53 for four.

Natalie Sciver briefly entertained in hitting a maximum en route to 32, but her efforts proved in vain as the tourists fell well short on 134 for six.

Despite a disappointing finish, the women’s academy can leave South Africa with their heads held high having twice beaten senior opposition in six attempts.
