Bangladesh women gain ODI status

Bangladesh women have secured one-day international status for the first time after defeating the USA at the International Cricket Council’s World Cup qualifying tournament.

Salma Khatun’s side saw their hopes of reaching the finals of the competition ended by a defeat to Sri Lanka earlier this week, but responded in impressive fashion.

The skipper said: “It feels fantastic to have gained ODI status and it means a lot for Bangladesh women’s cricket; things can only get better from here.”

In the same event, Ireland retained their ODI status at the expense of the Netherlands.

The four qualifiers for the 2013 World Cup had already been decided, with West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Pakistan joining reigning champions England, Australia, India and New Zealand.
