Essex celebrate with the silverware

Essex U15 Girls capped a wonderful season with a nail-biting final victory over Warwickshire to take the ECB U15 County Championship.

Warwickshire won the toss and put Essex in to bat on a good pitch at the ECB National Academy at Loughborough on September 11, but in overcast conditions.

Beth MacGregor fell early but Dani Armes and Lauren Onojaife batted well to take the score past 50. A small collapse in the middle order then saw Essex reduced to 76 for six before Kara Tolemon, who top scored in the Essex innings with 47 not out, found some good support from the lower order to take the Essex total to 138 for nine from their 35 overs.

Warwickshire then went in to bat and were soon taken apart by Essex’s opening bowlers, Armes and Catherine Dalton. Both girls picked up two wickets and each bowled with fantastic pace and control.

Warwickshire were reduced to 18 for four from nine overs. A solid partnership then took Warwickshire past 60 before MacGregor struck with two wickets and Rachel Barron one, which left them at 65 for seven.

Once again Warwickshire fought back with some sensible batting and took the score past the 100. Two run outs then brought Essex to the brink of victory at 114 for nine, but Duckett hit a couple of boundaries to make the game very close.

Barron held her nerve in the penultimate over and picked up the last wicket, helped by a superb running catch from Armes to give Essex the victory by seven runs.

Essex coach Matt Hyam said: “Once again, as they have done all season, Essex showed what a great team they are. Brilliantly led by Joanne Cook, the girls work for each other, back each other up and the team spirit is second to none. They should all be very proud of their achievements this season.”
