Glory for Banbury and Bells Yew Green
The Lady Taverners girls’ hardball Twenty20 competitions concluded at Campbell Park in Milton Keynes where Banbury from Oxfordshire and Bells Yew Green from Sussex were crowned national champions for under-13 and under-15 respectively.
Following some highly competitive cricket over the past few months, Banbury and Alberbury (Shropshire) emerged as the two strongest teams in the under-13 competition.
However, it was Banbury who were crowned national champions, cruising to a nine-wicket win after chasing down a victory target of 67.
Victorious captain Charlotte Boland insisted it was a team effort.
"Well done to the team," she said. "Everyone played their part and we could not have won without the whole team.”
The under-15 final was contested by Freeland (Oxfordshire) and Bells Yew Green, after their semi-final successes against Willington and Horsham respectively.
However, Bells Yew Green proved too strong for Freeland in the final as they sealed a tense nine-run win to claim the title.
Winning captain Sarah Martins was delighted with the result.
“The team played really well today," she said. "It was a brilliant game and Freeland gave a really good performance but we did just enough to win. Well done to everyone.”
