Lord's glory for Plympton

Plympton Cricket Club from Devon have won the first ever National Indoor Women’s Club Knockout competition.

They beat Burton Latimer from Northamptonshire in the final to complete a series of rounds and matches that have taken place between January to April.

Five teams - Plympton, Burton Latimer, Meir Heath, Shillingstone and Twickenham - qualified for the national finals that were held in the indoor school at Lord's.

Sue Redfern, ECB National Development Lead for Women’s and Girls' Cricket, said the competition had been a success.

“We wanted to provide additional competition opportunities for our women’s teams during the winter," she said.

"The six-a-side format encouraged more teams to enter and make it easier for teams to field smaller sides and fulfil commitments. We also ran the competition as a softball pairs format to make it easy and inclusive.

"Hopefully these teams and others can now see the benefit of playing indoor cricket in preparation for the cricket season and for additional matchplay opportunities.

"I would like to congratulate all teams who entered and those that made the final – all teams should be proud of their performances”.

Following the success of this competition and other county based indoor leagues during the winter, ECB are assessing how indoor women’s leagues continue next year.
