Rubies started strongly in the 2012 Super 4s with two wins from two on the first weekend of matches at the National Cricket Centre.

The Loughborough University fixtures on May 12 saw Jenny Gunn's side beat Charlotte Edwards' Diamonds team by eight wickets in the morning, and follow that up with a six-wicket win over Heather Knight's Sapphires in their second T20 match.

Katherine Brunt was the mainstay of the Diamonds' 93 for nine as she smacked 55 from 49 balls coming in at five, hitting three sixes in the process.

But it took the Rubies only 15.4 overs to canter to victory after Beth Morgan (37) and Sarah Taylor (32) had set them on their way with an opening stand of 70.

Again fielding first in the afternoon, they saw Sapphires make 110 for six, skipper Knight top-scoring with 37 opening the innings. But captain Gunn added an unbeaten 37 to 50 from Lydia Greenway as Rubies reached 113 for four with four balls to spare.

The other afternoon game saw Diamonds recover to post a 48-run win against Emeralds. Edwards (64) and Tammy Beaumont's 81 from 57 balls propelled them towards an impressive 167 for two; which proved way too big a total for the Academy players to chase, finishing on 119 for six despite an unbeaten 39 from keeper Amy Jones.

Emeralds had suffered a similar fate in the morning, making 111 for seven against Sapphires, for whom Rhiannon Dick took 3-11.

Danni Wyatt put the bulk of the runs on the board in the Sapphires' victory chase, her 49 from 46 balls helping them to 112 for three in 18.4 overs.

This coming weekend's fixtures see Sapphires v Diamonds and Emeralds v Rubies at National Cricket Centre on Saturday May 19; and the following day it's Diamonds v Emeralds at Oakham School, with Sapphires v Rubies at Hinckley Town CC.
