Yorkshire take top award
Yorkhire women's Under-17 captain Rochelle Petty collected the junior-team-of-the-year at the BBC North and Sport England awards 2006.
The award was for an outstanding season which saw Yorkshire lift the Liverpool Victoria County Championship after beating Kent in the final.
Following wins against Lancashire, Cheshire, Durham, Cumbria and Derbyshire, Yorkshire won a place in the finals by getting past a strong Warwickshire team.
The finals, held at the ECB National Cricket Academy at Loughborough University, were against a talented Kent side who were aiming for a win that would give them a clean sweep of all age groups for 2006.
After bowling Kent out for 140, Yorkshire were made to work hard by an excellent bowling display from Kent, with Lauren Winfield (52 not out) eventually scoring the winning runs with just balls to spare.
Yorkshire head coach Carl Parkin said: “It was great being part of the squad and winning the championship in my first season as head coach.
“I am very proud of the girls on what they have achieved this year.
“The travelling support was like having an extra player on the pitch. Winning the award was the icing on the cake after what have been a great and fantastic season.”
YWCA chairperson Barbara Hare added: “The association is extremely proud of the girls and the work they have put in this season.
“It was a huge squad effort from both players and the county support team that saw the under-17s crowned as county champions.
“We are delighted that these efforts have been publicly acknowledged with the junior team-of-the-year award and hope that it will inspire all the Yorkshire squads to aim high for the 2007 season.”
