Scotland's World Cup qualification hopes suffered a blow with a seven-wicket defeat to Afghanistan in an ICC World Cricket League Championship one-day international at Sharjah.

An unbeaten century by opening batsman Nawroz Mangal proved decisive as his side reached their target of 200 in the 34th over. He hit six sixes and eight fours in an unbeaten 112 from 96 balls.

Having won the toss, Scotland were limited to 199 for eight chiefly by seamer Gulbodin Naib’s 4-31 from nine overs as Richie Berrington top-scored with 51.

Mangal shared an unbroken stand of 164 with Samiullah Shenwari to complete a straightforward victory. The teams meet in the same competition and at the same venue on Friday.

Scotland remain second in the table behind Ireland on 11 points but the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates now have a game in hand and are just one point behind while Afghanistan have nine. The top two automatically qualify for the 2015 World Cup.
