David Hussey has been axed from Australia’s one-day squad for the first two one-day internationals against West Indies.

National selector John Inverarity revealed there had been concern over the team’s batting perormances during the tied series with Sri Lanka, and Hussey, whose elder brother Mike recently retired from international cricket, has paid the price.

Aaron Finch, at 26 nine years David Hussey’s junior, has been called up in place of his Victoria team-mate. Skipper Michael Clarke retains his place despite missing the final ODI versus Sri Lanka with an ankle injury.

“A top four of (David) Warner, Finch, (Phil) Hughes and (Michael) Clarke has good balance and the team looks forward to getting better starts than has been the case recently,” said Inverarity.

David Hussey

Veteran David Hussey has been made the scapegoat for Australia's inconsistent batting during the one-day internationals with Sri Lanka

“David Hussey has been dropped from the squad as the NSP keeps a constant eye on the future.

"Michael Clarke is making steady progress with the ankle he injured on 22 January and we are confident that Michael will recover in time to be fit for the first of the ODI fixtures against the West Indies.”

The five-match series gets under way at the WACA on February 1.

Australia squad: Michael Clarke (captain), George Bailey, Ben Cutting, Xavier Doherty, Aaron Finch, Moises Henriques, Phil Hughes, Mitchell Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade (wicketkeeper), David Warner.
