West Indies were dismissed for their lowest total in a one-day international against Australia, who cruised to a nine-wicket victory at the WACA thanks in part to Mitchell Starc's superb five-wicket haul.

After captain Darren Sammy elected to bat, the tourists were all out for 70 in 23.5 overs, their third lowest total in all formats behind 54 versus South Africa in 2004 and 61 against Bangladesh in 2011.

Glenn Maxwell took the hosts to their target in the 10th over with a crunching 51 not out from 35 balls to compound the Windies' humiliation in the first game of five.

Four tourists were dismissed for ducks with only Sammy, Kieran Powell and Darren Bravo making double figures.

Clint McKay started the rot by having Chris Gayle held at second slip, but it was Starc who did the majority of the damage to finish with a limited-overs-best 5-20.

James Faulkner took a wicket with his fifth ODI delivery when he removed Dwayne Bravo for a duck and was able to finish off the work of his fellow left-armer Starc.

Faulkner's dismissals came from identical deliveries that angled across right-handers to take the outside edge and find first slip Michael Clarke, who snaffled three in the cordon.

Starc followed up McKay's opening blow by dismissing Powell with a perfect outswinger to a left-hander, then had Ramnaresh Sarwan bowled through the gate two balls later with another swinging delivery.

When Starc dismissed Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard, respectively held at short-leg and bowled for ducks in his fourth, the visitors had fallen to 19 for five having lost four wickets for just one run.

Pollard had survived a big lbw shout, which was reviewed with just more than half the ball being shown to be missing the stumps before he played on with an expansive drive.

Once Faulkner had snared Devon Thomas, captain Darren Sammy and debutant Jason Holder led a brief revival when they combined for a 26-run partnership until McKay returned to the attack to have Sammy held at midwicket via a leading edge.

McKay then had Sunil Narine caught behind before chief destroyer Starc returned to end the innings by knocking over Jason Holder’s leg stump when he played a flamboyant drive.

If there were any thoughts Australia would find the total tricky, they were soon forgotten when Maxwell plundered three fours and a towering six over wide long-on off Kemar Roach's first over.

The tourists did at least avoid a 10-wicket defeat after Aaron Finch was caught behind from a waft at a wide Holder delivery.

That failed to stop Maxwell's charge, however and he reached his fifty in the ninth over with his ninth four.

Usman Khawaja hit the winning single in the next over to complete a sensational day for Australia on which Michael Di Venuto was named their batting coach.
