Voges ton adds gloss to whitewash

Adam Voges’ hundred trumped Johnson Charles’ as Australia completed a 5-0 one-day international whitewash of West Indies at the MCG.

Voges’ unbeaten 112 from 106 deliveries helped the hosts overcome a difficult start and lifted them to a competitive 274 for five.

Charles, whose century like Voges’ was his first in international cricket, rode his luck to underpin the reply until his departure for 100. The Windies then fell to a 17-run loss as they were dismissed with a ball unused.

Clint McKay, who had Charles caught at fine-leg immediately after going to three figures, and Mitchell Johnson each took three wickets.

Darren Sammy won the toss and opposite number Shane Watson, leading in place of the injured Michael Clarke, played on to Tino Best from the game’s first delivery. Australia were two for two when Aaron Finch top-edged Best to fine-leg.

Phil Hughes and Shaun Marsh rebuilt with a 61-run stand until the former was caught at backward point for 29 by Kieron Pollard at the second attempt off Dwayne Bravo.

Sammy fatefully dropped Voges on seven at slip off spinner Sunil Narine shortly before Marsh edged Bravo behind to depart for 40.

That left Australia 82 for four in the 25th over, but Voges and Brad Haddin took control with an alliance of 111 that ended when Haddin miscued Kemar Roach to deep square-leg on 43.

Voges pressed on to his landmark with regular boundaries - he finished with 10 fours and two sixes - and James Faulkner’s 25-ball 34 not out provided a shot in the arm for the hosts.

Johnson struck an early blow by having Kieran Powell taken at second slip where Charles was soon shelled on 10 by Finch off McKay.

Charles and Darren Bravo capitalised by adding 106 before Faulkner’s athletic catch at mid-off gave Xavier Doherty the wicket of Bravo for 33.

Hughes shelling a Dwayne Bravo skier at cover mattered little as Johnson bowled him through the gate for 13 later in the over. However, Ryan Carter then dropped a sitter at deep cover to reprieve Charles on 77 off Faulkner.

Charles fell in the batting powerplay, which yielded just 21 and also saw Cutting have Narsingh Deonarine caught behind.

Pollard provided impetus but, having seen Devon Thomas run out for 19, holed out to long-on for 45 off Faulkner.

West Indies then faltered as Johnson bowled Narine and, in the last over, McKay had Sammy caught behind for 23 and Best at deep midwicket.
