Sangakkara eases Sri Lanka to win

Kumar Sangakkara’s century was the highlight as Sri Lanka eased to a dominant victory over Bangladesh in their Asia Cup match in Lahore.

The left-hander hit 16 boundaries in his 91-ball innings of 101 to set Sri Lanka on their way to victory by 131 runs.

Bangladesh came up well short of their victory target of 358, managing just 226 for seven before they ran out of overs.

Jayasuriya got the innings off to a flyer reaching his 65th one-day international 50 in the 10th over as the Bangladesh attack was put to the sword.

Jayasuriya was eventually bowled by Abdur Razzak in the 15th over for 72. His innings included 10 fours and three sixes and left Sri Lanka on course for a big total at 116 for one after 14.5 overs.

Sangakkara carried on where his opening partner left off. In the 20th over he hit five fours off Dolar Mahmud who also dropped a return catch.

Despite skipper Mahela Jayawardene chopping Razzak on for six, Sangakkara completed his eighth ODI hundred in the 27th over.

He departed shortly afterwards, top-edging Mahmudullah to Tamim Iqbal at cover.

Chamara Kapugedera and Chamara Silva added a tidy 50-run partnership before Silva (19) was caught behind off Alok Kapali.

Kapugedera then indulged in some lusty hitting, bringing him an impressive 74 until he holed out to Mashrafe Mortaza at long on to become Razzak’s third victim.

Chaminda Vaas (13), Nuwan Kulasekara (one), Tillakaratne Dilshan (29) and Muttiah Muralitharan (five) all fell in the final four overs, giving Mortaza and Shahadat Hossain two wickets apiece as Bangladesh were left with an improbable victory target.

Mushfiqur Rahim was the pick of the Bangladesh batsmen as he posted 44 from 53 deliveries before he was caught and bowled by Muralitharan.

Muralitharan also accounted for Bangladesh’s next best performer, Raqibul Hasan, who scored 35 from 57 balls before he had his stumps removed by Sangakkara after straying out of his crease.

Tamim Iqbal (28), Alok Kapali (30) and Mashrafe Mortaza (34) contributed useful knocks for Bangladesh, but Sri Lanka never looked threatened.

Bangladesh won their opening match in Group A on Tuesday when they defeated United Arab Emirates by 96 runs.
