Naeem Islam’s maiden international century took Bangladesh within touching distance of West Indies’ imposing first-innings total on day three of the first Test in Dhaka.

Naeem struck 108, Shakib Al Hasan 89 and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim 43 as Bangladesh reached 455 for six in reply to the Windies’ 527 for four declared.

With Mahmudullah unbeaten on 42 and Nasir Hossain 33, Bangladesh looked in good shape to match or surpass the tourists’ effort.

Shakib, resuming on 16, enjoyed some early fortune having added just 10 to his total when he edged a Ravi Rampaul no-ball behind.

The left-hander responded impressively, however, delivering an innings of substance that is all-too often lacking from the talented all-rounder’s cricket.

Shakib largely profited from nudging and nurdling, though he did display some typical panache when charging Sunil Narine, first slapping the mystery spinner for four before launching a maximum down the ground next ball.

Yet Rampaul eventually got rid of the former Tigers captain, who drove tamely to substitute fielder Asad Fudadin at cover.

All the while Naeem was accumulating, his hallmark being patience and excellent shot-selection.

Having faced 228 deliveries - and advanced cautiously through the nineties - he reached the milestone by clipping Tino Best through fine-leg.

Naeem had compiled 102 by the time tea came, but only added six more before he was caught behind off Darren Sammy.

Yet there was little doubt he had played the outstanding knock, albeit ably supported by Mushfiqur - who was eventually caught and bowled by left-arm spinning debutant Veerasammy Permaul.

Mahmudullah and Nasir ensured Bangladesh finished strongly, impressive in an 87-run stand.
