Ireland had no answer to an unbroken century stand between Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful and opener Shahriar Nafees as the hosts won the first one-day international in Mirpur by eight wickets.
Ireland were seeking a second successive ODI victory over Bangladesh after their heroics at last year’s World Cup.
But after being restricted to 185 for seven - principally by the pace bowling of Mashrafe Mortaza (3-22) - they were powerless to prevent Nafees (90no) and Ashraful (64no) from racing to victory with more than 10 overs to spare.
The third-wicket pair came together at 56 for two and put on 130, left-hander Nafees hitting 11 fours from 120 balls and Ashraful eight from 90.
Ireland had earlier stumbled to 18 for two. But a handy contribution from Eoin Morgan (34) and then a seventh-wicket stand of 65 between Alex Cusack (38) and captain Trent Johnston (31no) at least gave them something to bowl at - despite the best efforts of Mortaza.
