Black Caps reward Ingram and McKay

Central Stags batsman Peter Ingram's fine performances have earned him a call-up to both New Zealand's squads

Peter Ingram and Andrew McKay were the big winners when New Zealand named their one-day and Twenty20 squads today for next month’s series against Bangladesh.

Wellington medium-pacer McKay was the notable inclusion in the one-day squad, while Ingram has been rewarded for his impressive performances at the top of the order for Central Districts with first-time selection in both squads.

“Peter has been scoring a lot of runs across all forms of the game. We wanted to give him an opportunity against Bangladesh,” said New Zealand selector Mark Greatbatch.

“It is exciting for him and good reward for some very good performances over a couple of seasons.

“Similarly, Andrew has been impressing around the traps for a while, with Auckland and latterly with Wellington.

“He has some good pace about him and we wanted to give him a chance at the next level up.”

Ingram’s selection meant there was no room for Lou Vincent who had been touted for a possible recall more than two years after he walked out on international cricket following some strong performances for Auckland.

There were, however, recalls for all-rounder James Franklin and wicketkeeper-batsman Gareth Hopkins, who was named in the Twenty20 squad only. Scott Styris was the biggest casualty after a below-par series against Pakistan.

Greatbatch also indicated that the teams had been selected with an eye to the World Cups coming up in the next 12 months.

“We have picked two sides for Bangladesh, but our mid-to-long-term focus is on the two World Cup campaigns - this year’s T20 and next year’s ODI World Cup,” he said.

“A number of players who have missed out on these teams are definitely still in the mix for those tournaments and for the upcoming series against Australia.”

Franklin comes in for Grant Elliott, who was one of several leading players not considered because of injury.

Jesse Ryder (groin), Shane Bond (abdomen) and Kyle Mills (shoulder and knee) were also ruled out, although Bond is expected to return for the series against Australia which follows the visit of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh series starts with a Twenty20 international on February 3. Three one-dayers follow before a one-off Test in Hamilton.
