Hayden the hero for Chennai

Chennai's Matthew Hayden continued his impressive form with a match-winning innings of 60 not out against Mumbai

A half-century from Matthew Hayden powered Chennai Super Kings to a seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

Hayden struck an unbeaten 60 from 57 deliveries as the Super Kings overhauled Mumbai’s score of 147 for five at Port Elizabeth.

The former Australia opener’s knock overshadowed a well-made 62 from Jean-Paul Duminy, who held the Indians’ innings together and helped his side reach a decent total.

The Super Kings lost Parthiv Patel, Suresh Raina and Subramaniam Badrinath cheaply, but Hayden and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who scored 23 not out, staged a fightback to get them over the line.

Hayden was dropped by Lasith Malinga even before he could get off the mark and survived a run-out attempt in the second over, before carefully playing out several tight overs of spin from the Indians.

He reached his half-century by smashing Harbhajan Singh for a six, while Dhoni brought up victory with a boundary off Bravo with five deliveries to spare.

Duminy had made his highest score in the tournament and, in the process, prevented the Indians from collapsing.

Albie Morkel had given the Super Kings a bright start by snaring opener Dwayne Bravo in his second over, but a combination of poor bowling and disappointing fielding gave the Indians an opportunity to recover.

Sanath Jayasuriya smashed 30 off just 17 deliveries but fell off the last ball in the powerplay as Mumbai slipped to 49 for two.

Sachin Tendulkar went shortly afterwards and the Indians were in danger of coming apart at the seams before Abhishek Nayar and Duminy steadied the ship with a 65-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Duminy began his innings briskly, clubbing Sudeep Thyagi for two boundaries in his second over, and brought up his half-century with a six off spinner Shadab Jakati.

He was dismissed in the final over of Mumbai’s innings, run out by Morkel while backing up too far at the non-striker’s end, but Nayar gave the innings impetus as he finished unbeaten on 33 from 27 deliveries.
