Champions League T20 holders Mumbai Indians suffered an opening eight-wicket defeat to Lions at the Wanderers thanks to an unbroken 121-run stand between Quinton de Kock and Neil McKenzie.

De Kock’s 51 from 33 balls and McKenzie’s 68 from 41 aided a chase of 158 with seven deliveries to spare in each side’s first Group B game. The second-wicket duo had joined forces with 37 on the board in the in the seventh over after opening batsmen Alviro Petersen and Gulam Bodi were respectively caught off Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh.

That was after a team batting effort helped Mumbai, who were put in, to 157 for six.

Dwayne Smith sped to 26 until being lbw to Chris Morris and opening partner Sachin Tendulkar was bowled for 16 by Aaron Phangiso, whose four overs cost just 17. Dirk Nannes cleaned up Rohit Sharma for a run-a-ball 27 and Sohail Tanvir likewise removed Kieron Pollard for 11.

Mitchell Johnson, batting at four, top-scored for the Indians with 30 before being caught behind off Tanvir and Dinesh Karthik added late impetus with a rapid 19 not out.

In the day’s first game, also in Group B at the Wanderers, Moises Henriques played a key role with bat and ball as Sydney Sixers began their campaign with a 14-run victory over Chennai Super Kings.

Shane Watson, player of the tournament in the recent World Twenty20, contributed a 30-ball 46 at the top of the order for Sydney, yet it was fellow all-rounder Henriques who made the biggest impact in striking 49 not out from just 23 deliveries.

That set up a fearsome total of 185 for five and Henriques then claimed three wickets - including the vital scalp of Suresh Raina - as toss-winners Chennai mustered 171 for nine in reply.

India batsman Raina used up just 33 deliveries in making 57, but the Super Kings’ hopes faded quickly when he and Mahendra Singh Dhoni fell in the same over.

Watson will be available to Sydney for their next two games - versus Yorkshire and Lions - but will then return home ahead of their last group match under orders from Cricket Australia.
