Yorkshire crashed out of the Champions League T20 as Lions battled to an impressive five-wicket victory with four balls to spare at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

The White Rose, depleted by injuries to key seamers Ryan Sidebottom and Moin Ashraf, posted 131 for seven - either side of a brief rain delay - after winning the toss, Phil Jaques top-scoring with 31.

That total proved insubstantial as Quinton de Kock and Jean Symes, with 32 and an unbeaten 27 respectively, led the way to guarantee Lions’ place in the next phase following three wins and just one loss in Group B.

Yorkshire made a bright start as Jaques capitalised on anything short to find a couple of early boundaries, while opening partner Andrew Gale played more circumspectly.

Skipper Gale found the fence a couple of times himself, but his ungainly knock came to an end when - having compiled 21 - he skied an attempted slog off Dwaine Pretorius to the wicketkeeper.

Joe Root fell soon after, sweeping left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso straight to deep square-leg before Jaques was bowled by part-time spinner Alviro Petersen.

Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance chipped in with useful contributions, the former striking the only six of the innings when clattering a Chris Morris slower-ball over long-on - only to fall for a 17-ball 21 immediately after.

Ballance also scored at better than a run-a-ball, his three fours helping Yorkshire to their eventual score.

Petersen showed a fine array of strokes in compiling 20, clipping through midwicket, driving to cover and cutting authoritatively.

Yet, despite looking impressive, the opener was caught behind off Oliver Hannon-Dalby before Steven Patterson trapped Gulam Bodi, who had been starved off the strike, plumb in front with an in-swinger.

De Kock responded impressively either side of Neil McKenzie departing, striking Hannon-Dalby over long-on for six before repeating the trick, this time in the midwicket area, off Azeem Rafiq.

The White Rose continued to chip away, however, as Iain Wardlaw got rid of the left-hander via a leading edge before Pretorius - having hammered Adil Rashid over long-on for six - fell to Patterson for 25.

Despite a poor start, Symes then showed outstanding poise, slashing Hannon-Dalby - in the penultimate over - for a maximum before driving the next ball down the ground for four.

Symes then finished the job in the next over with back-to-back fours to send Yorkshire, defending champions Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings out of the competition.

That left Chennai and Mumbai with a dead rubber in the evening game at the same venue, an entertaining contest that the Super Kings won by six runs.

Having lost the toss, Chennai raced to 86 without loss from eight overs thanks in part to Murali Vijay’s 25-ball 39. His opening partner Francois du Plessis went on to 52 from 33 deliveries in a commanding 173 for eight also aided by Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 19-ball 35. Lasith Malinga took 5-32, his third Twenty20 five-for.

Mumbai’s reply began slowly but Dinesh Kartik rallied with 74 from 45 deliveries was supported by thirties from Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard. The Indians needed 19 from the final over but Ravindra Jadeja removed Pollard and Harbhajan Singh to earn victory.
