Tillakaratne Dilshan

Following defeat in the Test and one-day series with South Africa, Tillakaratne Dilshan has let go the Sri Lanka captaincy in all three formats

Tillakaratne Dilshan has resigned as Sri Lanka captain in all three formats of the game, a day after his team’s tour of South Africa ended.

The Proteas won the Test series 2-1 and took the one-day series 3-2, although the tourists responded well to claim the last two ODIs after the hosts were on course for a whitewash.

A press release from Sri Lanka Cricket, posted on the International Cricket Council’s website today, read: "National captain TM Dilshan has submitted his resignation as captain of the national team to the chairman of the national selection committee with immediate effect.

“Dilshan has resigned as captain in all three formats of the game. We wish him well as he continues to represent Sri Lanka as a national player.”

Dilshan has been named in Sri Lanka’s squad for the Commonwealth Bank Series with Australia and India, which will be led by Mahela Jayawardene who was one-day skipper from 2004 until 2009.

The 15-man party has two changes from the last. Seam bowling all-rounder Farveez Maharoof and paceman Chanaka Welegedara have replaced Kosala Kulasekara and Dilhara Fernando. Maharoof and Welegedara last played a one-day international in June 2010.

Batsman Thilan Samaraweera has been put on stand-by by Sri Lanka’s new selectors.

Sri Lanka squad: Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Angelo Mathews (vice-captain), Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara (wicketkeeper), Dinesh Chandimal (wicketkeeper), Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Farveez Maharoof, Rangana Herath, Sachithra Senanayake, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekera, Chanaka Welegedara, Dhammika Prasad.
