TwelfthMan: My account
The second Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh petered out into the inevitable draw, meaning the tourists clinch the series 1-0.
After the first three days were washed out in Mirpur, the Black Caps declared their first innings on 262 for six yesterday with the hosts doing likewise on 169 for nine in the second session today - still trailing by 93.
New Zealand moved onto 79 for one in the final session to extend their overall advantage to 172 but, in what had effectively become a two-day Test, there was no time for the match to reach a positive conclusion.
The only wicket to fall in the tourists’ second innings was that of Jamie How, who was caught at mid-off by Abdur Razzak off the bowling of Mashrafe Mortaza before tea.
Aaron Redmond finished unbeaten on 30 alongside Jesse Ryder who was left on 39.
Earlier, Bangladesh - after resuming on 13 for three - moved onto 169 for nine before declaring.
Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza led the revival with a 78-run seventh-wicket stand before both fell after lunch just short of their half-centuries.
Shakib was dismissed for 49, trapped lbw by New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori, and Mashrafe was then caught at short-leg by Daniel Flynn off Iain O’Brien for 48.
O’Brien then snaffled the wicket of Shahadat Hossain, caught at mid-off by Vettori for four, prompting the declaration from Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful.
With Vettori having taken three wickets in his only over of the evening yesterday to stun the home team, Mehrab Hossain Jr and Tamim Iqbal set about steadying the ship.
But after contributing seven runs, Mehrab was trapped lbw by Jeetan Patel.
Tamim was joined by Mushfiqur Rahim and the pair added 18 for the fifth wicket before the opener, on 24, edged Vettori to Ross Taylor to hand the skipper his fourth wicket of the innings.
In the next over Mushfiqur followed Tamim back to the pavilion as he gloved a delivery from O'Brien to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum.
But, after the early breakthroughs, the Black Caps were frustrated before lunch as Shakib and Mashrafe built their partnership
