Dyson demands Windies improvement
West Indies coach John Dyson told his team they must improve in every department after handing Australia a simple win in the first one-day international on Tuesday.
The hosts could not make it past the 40th over as they replied to Australia’s 273, posting just 189 in reply to go 1-0 down in the five-match series.
Dyson said: “We didn’t bowl well enough. We didn’t bat well enough. It’s the truth.
“We have to regroup and rethink our approach and just work hard in the next couple of days to make sure we put up a considerably better performance in the next game.
“It is a series of five. It’s not the end of the earth yet.”
The Windies tried the unusual tactic of opening up with captain Chris Gayle’s off-spin from one end - an experiment which lasted just one over.
Dyson explained: “We’ve talked about variations and possible variations that we can have, but you still have to bowl in better areas than we bowled.
“There wasn’t anything wrong tactically with what Chris did. It was a good move at times. Variations disrupt the rhythm of the innings.”
