Elgar earns Test call
Dean Elgar will join South Africa’s Test squad in Australia after being selected as the replacement for JP Duminy.
The Proteas were forced to look for an additional batsman when Duminy suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during a training drill that followed the close of play on Friday.
In calling up Elgar, a left-hander who made his one-day international debut against England earlier this year, South Africa believe they have chosen a “like-for-like” replacement.
However, Francois du Plessis, part of the original Test party, is expected to take Duminy’s place for the second Test in Adelaide, starting on November 22.
Elgar, who also bowls part-time spin, struggled to make an impact in the five-match NatWest Series with England, recording scores of 15, 42, 35 and one.
