TwelfthMan: My account
Chris Gayle is looking for his West Indies side to push on from their win against New Zealand in Christchurch as they find themselves in the unfamiliar position of leading a one-day series.
A five-wicket Duckworth-Lewis victory in the rain-shortened match in Christchurch handed the tourists a 1-0 series lead after the opening match in Queenstown was washed out.
West Indies’ most recent one-day campaigns have seen them swept aside 5-0 by Australia and 3-0 by Pakistan.
Last April's 2-0 series win against Sri Lanka was the last time the Windies enjoyed success in the limited-overs arena, and captain Gayle is hopeful his players can follow up their Christchurch success with victory in Wellington on Wednesday.
"We haven't really been in front in the past, so hopefully this can be the starting point for us to build on these starts when we get them," Gayle said.
"I know New Zealand will come hard at us and we expect that from them so we'll be going hard at them as well."
Gayle believes there were plenty of positives to come out of Saturday's victory, particularly Ramnaresh Sarwan's match-winning unbeaten 67 off 65 balls.
"For someone who had not been in the best of form to actually step up to the plate and win the game, you have to give credit to him for the way he batted,” Gayle added.
“Our bowlers did pretty well too so the aim is to continue in the same vein. We're pretty confident but not too over-confident. We still have work to do.
"We can't be laidback. We have to constantly get the basic things right and try and capitalise on whatever start we get with the ball and with the bat."
Shivnarine Chanderpaul could make his first appearance of the one-day series at the Westpac Stadium.
The left-handed batsman has been absent with discomfort in his left hand caused by prolonged periods of batting, but he has been having regular treatment on the problem. A decision will be made on the morning of the game.
"He's looking good,” said Gayle. “The last couple of days have been good. He had a hit yesterday and even today he's looking better. Hopefully he'll be ready tomorrow. We'll keep our fingers crossed.”
