Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin's ongoing recovery from a finger operation will keep him out of the Champions Trophy

Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy as he recovers from surgery on a fractured finger.

Haddin broke his left ring finger on the morning of the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston – he was replaced by Graham Manou – but kept wicket in the final two matches of a series Australia lost 2-1.

The 31-year-old, who scored a century in the opening Test in Cardiff and finished with 268 runs at a series average of 44.7, returned home following the end of the fifth Test to undergo further assessment on the injury.

An operation ruled him out of the one-day leg of the tour of England, and it has now been confirmed he will play no part in the Champions Trophy in South Africa which begins on September 22.

Haddin will be replaced by Tim Paine, who was chosen in the initial 30-man party and is deputising in England, after Cricket Australia received clearance from the International Cricket Council.

"While it is extremely disappointing to miss the ICC Champions Trophy, the good news is that the surgery was successful and my finger will be 100% when the recovery period is finalised," Haddin said.

"In the past I have been able to recover from finger injuries and surgery very quickly and I am hopeful this will again be the case.

"I am aiming to be available for selection for the one-day series in India. However, this is a decision that will be made in consultation with the Cricket Australia medical staff when the time arises.”

CA doctor Trefor James added: “While the surgery was a success and there have been no complications, the timeframe for recovery is not sufficient and therefore he cannot be considered for selection.”
