TwelfthMan: My account
In-form Queensland wicketkeeper Chris Hartley has put his personal aspirations to one side to argue under-pressure Australia gloveman Brad Haddin should be given more time to grow into the role.
Haddin is attracting criticism following a lack of runs and some less than tidy glovework since taking over from the incomparable Adam Gilchrist earlier this year.
But Hartley is supportive of his rival despite being one of those in line should the New South Welshman lose his place in the Australia team.
He also effected 10 dismissals in Queensland's 10-wicket win over the Blues in their Sheffield Shield clash.
"Haddin's had a pretty tough tour of India as any 'keeper would,” said 26-year-old Hartley.
“I think people need to remember that for four or five years he was doing a pretty damn good job for New South Wales.
"I'd be surprised if he wasn't going to get a good run for a while because he's earned that at first-class level.
"Don't take me the wrong way - if I was to be able to take his spot then I'd take it in a second.
“But the fact of the matter is domestic cricket in Australia is very strong.
"There are a number of players who when playing for Australia have had to do it tough for a number of years.
"He’s getting his chance now but he's done a job for so many years for New South Wales that I think it would be pretty unfair if he wasn't given a fair run in the Australia side."
As to where he sees himself in the pecking order, Hartley declared: "I think in the next 18 months there's going to be a lot of young players around Australia who are going to be getting opportunities.
"There's an Ashes tour next year when traditionally they've taken two 'keepers.
“So perhaps there's a spot there for a young keeper to play the understudy role to Haddin."
