White Ferns continue winning ways

Opener Suzie Bates hits a boundary for New Zealand as they ease past West Indies today

New Zealand made it two wins out of two in their ICC Women’s World Twenty20 campaign with a comprehensive 52-run victory over West Indies.

The White Ferns batted first and openers Suzie Bates (60) and Lucy Doolan (41) put on 94 for the first wicket.

Spinner Stafanie Taylor’s spell of 2-25 from four overs sparked a collapse as New Zealand slumped to 128 for six but some late hitting from Sarah Tsukigawa (21 not out) carried the total to 158.

Taylor continued her impressive display with a half-century at better than a run a ball but a lack of support meant the Windies never seriously threatened to get close and Doolan’s 3-16 kept them to 106 for seven from their 20 overs.

In the day’s second match, India edged Pakistan by five wickets in a low-scoring affair.

Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first but slipped to 27 for three.

Rumeliu Dhar, with 3-13, did the damage with the new ball before Priyanka Roy destroyed the innings with 5-14 in a total of 75 all out.

India lost five wickets in their response and might have struggled even more had it not been for opener Anjum Chopra’s 37 not out which took them over the line with 14 balls to spare.
