India will now be without Yuvraj Singh's power in the middle order during the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa
India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy after fracturing a finger.
The middle-order batsman sustained the injury while training in Johannesburg today and will return home shortly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed.
“Yuvraj has fractured a finger in his right hand and has been ruled out for six weeks,” said a BCCI spokesman.
“The selectors have chosen Virat Kohli as his replacement. Yuvraj will fly out as soon as formalities are completed.”
Yuvraj was participating in a fielding drill at the University Ground when he pulled out due to the injury.
He was attended to by physio Nitin Patel before leaving for a medical examination.
India are already severely depleted with opener Virender Sehwag and fast bowler Zaheer Khan both missing the tournament due to shoulder injuries, and opening batsman Gautam Gambhir still recovering from a groin strain.
India’s first match is against Pakistan on Saturday.
