Andrew Symonds starred with bat and ball as Deccan Chargers defeated Delhi Daredevils by 10 runs in the Indian Premier League at Cuttack.
Rohit Sharma top-scored for Deccan with a belligerent 45 and Symonds continued his fine batting form with 35, while Herschelle Gibbs and Tirumalasetti Suman chipped in with 31 and 29 not out respectively in the Chargers’ total of 171 for six.
David Warner weighed in with a fiery 57 and Dinesh Karthik made 46 for the Daredevils, but Symonds claimed 3-21 and the visitors lost their nerve in a close finish.
Adam Gilchrist, who won the toss, and Gibbs built early momentum by adding 41 for the second wicket in 4.1 overs.
Sharma and Suman later combined for 60 to ensure a challenging total as five of Delhi’s six bowlers each claimed a sole breakthrough.
Warner gave the Daredevils hope, putting on 51 with AB de Villiers, who struck 27.
However, Warner’s run out sparked a stream of wickets with three to Symonds and two to leg-spinner Rahul Sharma.
Delhi went close, but two wickets at the beginning of the last over - bowled by Chaminda Vaas - settled the score as Delhi finished nine down.
