Yuvraj Singh salvaged victory for Kings XI Punjab after they forced the Super Kings to a super over in Chennai
Yuvraj Singh sparkled with the bat to help Kings XI Punjab register their first win in the 2010 Indian Premier League, defeating hosts Chennai Super Kings via a super over.
The Kings XI, put into bat at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, were shackled by Muttiah Muralitharan’s 3-16 and were restricted to 136 for eight with only Yuvraj’s 43 and Irfan Pathan’s 39 notable contributions.
In reply, Parthiv Patel made a composed 57 off 58 deliveries and added 65 for the opening wicket with Matthew Hayden, who struck 33.
The Super Kings needed 10 from the final over of their 20 and Irfan conceded nine from the first four deliveries, but bowled a dot ball then dismissed Ravichandran Ashwin to tie the scores.
The super over was enforced and Chennai managed only nine off Juan Theron, losing both Hayden and Suresh Raina in the process.
Needing 10 to win, Mahela Jayawardene slammed Muralitharan for a straight six before holing out at long-on, but Yuvraj kept his cool and secured victory with two deliveries to spare courtesy of a reverse-sweep for four.
