Ed Joyce

Ireland's 117-run defeat of Kenya at Mombasa today was built on Ed Joyce's 88 from 125 balls, including five fours and three sixes

Ireland went top of the International Cricket Council World Cricket League with a 117-run thrashing of Kenya at Mombasa.

Having lost to the same opponents by seven wickets in Saturday’s one-day international, the tourists today moved a win clear of second-placed Scotland - albeit from two more games.

Ed Joyce’s steady 88 underpinned a total of 237 for nine and Ireland shared out the wickets while dismissing their opponents in 35.1 overs.

Will Porterfield’s decision to bat first looked questionable when his side slipped to 48 for three after he was one of two wickets for Shem Ngoche.

However, Joyce led a recovery - adding 50 with Kevin O’Brien and 83 with Andrew White. Joyce became Hiren Varaiya’s third victim, having hit five fours and three sixes from 125 balls, which began a late slide of four wickets for 19 runs.

Two early scalps for Trent Johnston left the hosts 17 for three and they never recovered as Alex Cusack, Paul Stirling and George Dockrell also struck twice.

Number nine Ngoche top-scored for Kenya with 28, but he was run out by O’Brien to end proceedings.
