Maher thrilled after Bulls win
Pura Cup-winning skipper Jimmy Maher says Queensland's resounding victory over Victoria in the championship decider reminded him of the state's breakthrough title a decade ago.
Until 1994-95, the Bulls had never won the then Sheffield Shield competition but broke their duck in emphatic fashion, thrashing South Australia by an innings and 101 runs.
Maher saw parallels with that result in the 2005-06 Pura Cup final against the Bushrangers.
He said: "It's awesome - it really is surreal, everything worked exactly like it did in 1994-95.”
Maher was one of Queensland’s star performers, striking a majestic 223 in the enormous 900 for six the side scored in their first innings.
"We amounted a massive score and bowled them out twice on a good cricket pitch,” he said.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better performance from any one of the players in the team. It was a great team effort."
Maher was also pleased by the result because his team had succumbed in their past two finals, including last year when the hosts went down by one wicket to a New South Wales team chasing the moderate target of 183.
"There were a lot of guys that were really keen to erase last year's final because that has taken every bit of 12 months to get over. It was heartbreaking last year. We were supposed to win - but didn't," Maher said.
Maher also believes the Bulls are on the verge of putting together another dynasty.
"I think we will get better as a result of this performance," Maher said. "Blokes like Shane Watson, Clinton Perren, Mitchell Johnson - they're only going to get better."
"Mitchell Johnson: what a performance on a flat wicket - 10 wickets. How he didn’t get man-of-the-match is beyond me,” said Maher.
