The Pakistan Cricket Board have offered Salim Malik the post of chief coach of the national cricket academy in Lahore.
Malik last month had a life ban overturned by a civil court in Lahore following a protracted legal battle.
The PCB had handed Malik a life ban for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing scandal following a two-year enquiry in 1997.
"The PCB chairman Ijaz Butt has offered Malik the post of chief coach of the National Cricket Academy," PCB media manager Raza Rashid confirmed.
"Malik has accepted the offer in principle, but we still have to work out terms and conditions of the contract."
The post fell vacant after Mudassar Nazar left to join the ICC global academy in Dubai.
Malik signalled his intention to coach after having his ban overturned, saying: "I can go into coaching now. That is always something I wanted to do."
Meanwhile, the PCB have also finalised a two-year deal with new national coach Intikhab Alam, who took over after former coach Geoff Lawson was sacked.
Alam's first assignment will be the three-match one-day series against West Indies in Abu Dhabi later this month.
The 66-year-old is to be paid six million rupees a year, but has been banned from writing for newspapers and other media acitivity.
