Hampshire captain and England all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas has joined Tasmania for Australia’s domestic Twenty20, the Big Bash.
The 32-year-old replaces the unavailable Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga, who is required for his country’s one-day series with Bangladesh, as the Tasmanian Tigers’ overseas player for the tournament.
Cricket Tasmania operations general manager David Boon said: “When Malinga was first signed we knew this was a possibility and, although it is disappointing, we have a suitable back-up player in Dimitri Mascarenhas, who will arrive in Hobart during December.”
Mascarenhas, born in Middlesex and brought up in Australia, has played 14 Twenty20s and 20 one-day internationals for England. He has also played limited-overs cricket for Otago and, in the Indian Premier League, Rajasthan Royals.
He is set to make his Tasmania debut on December 30 against New South Wales.
