As part of its ongoing service to international cricket, the MCC has announced that it has formed a new committee made up of some of the world’s leading cricketers, past and present.

The remit of the MCC World Cricket committee, which will be chaired by Tony Lewis, the MCC Chairman of Cricket, will be to discuss any aspect of the game, especially those which have an impact on the Laws or the Spirit of Cricket, included as the preamble to the Laws.

It will be empowered to conduct research, particularly into technological advances and biomechanical elements of the game and its players.

The committee, which will meet at Lord’s for the first time on Monday April 24, will provide an independent body of cricketers with international experience with the opportunity to have wide-ranging discussions, to assist the long-established Laws Working Party and to support, constructively question or challenge changes to the game at its various levels throughout the world.

The membership of the committee has a wealth of experience, as made evident by an aggregate of 1,183 Test appearances.

This inaugural meeting will consider Laws 24.2 and 24.3, dealing with Unfair Deliveries, and discussion about future research projects.

Lewis, MCC’s Chairman of Cricket, said: “I am delighted that so many top cricketers have agreed to serve on the MCC World Cricket committee.

“They will be well qualified to discuss matters relating to national and international cricket, from the lowest level to ICC, and to provide support or to challenge as appropriate.

“This forum will replace the Laws, Spirit and Ethos sub-committee, which was created under the chairmanship of Ted Dexter in 2000, when MCC stream-lined its committee structure, and which carried out much valuable work on behalf of the club.”

The members of the MCC World Cricket Committee are:

  • Mike Atherton
  • Mike Brearley
  • Geoffrey Boycott
  • Martin Crowe
  • Tony Dodemaide
  • Rahul Dravid
  • Andy Flower
  • Mike Gatting
  • Majid Khan
  • Barry Richards
  • David Shepherd
  • Alec Stewart
  • Courtney Walsh
  • Steve Waugh
