Brendon McCullum

In Ross Taylor's absence, Brendon McCullum has been named as New Zealand's captain for the limited-overs matches against Zimbabwe

Brendon McCullum will lead a New Zealand squad featuring a host of uncapped players in the one-day and Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe.

McCullum has been appointed as stand-in captain in the absence of Ross Taylor, who suffered a calf injury in the one-off Test between the two sides.

The Black Caps have named four players with no international experience in their 13-man ODI squad, in the shape of left-arm seamer Michael Bates, leg-spinner Tarun Nethulla, all-rounder Andrew Ellis and wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham.

In addition, all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme and left-arm spinner Ronnie Hira will hope to make their first appearances for New Zealand after being named in a Twenty20 party comprising of 14 players.

BJ Watling, who compiled his maiden Test century in Napier this weekend, has been omitted, while Jesse Ryder, like Taylor, is unavailable due to injury.

New Zealand national selection manager Kim Littlejohn said: “The new caps have earned their chance through solid performances at domestic level and we think it’s the right time to take a look at players who will be in the frame for the Twenty20 World Cup later in the year, and looking further ahead to the 2015 ODI World Cup.”

New Zealand ODI squad: Brendon McCullum (captain), Michael Bates, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Andrew Ellis, Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Tarun Nethula, Rob Nicol, Tim Southee, Kane Williamson.

New Zealand T20 squad: Brendon McCullum (captain), Michael Bates, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Colin de Grandhomme, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Ronnie Hira, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Rob Nicol, Jacob Oram, Tim Southee, Kane Williamson.
