Former Australia batsman and Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody has been confirmed as coach of Western Australia for the next three years.

Moody, who led the Warriors to two domestic first class titles and a domestic one-day title, had been linked with a return to his home state since Wayne Clark stepped down after the 2006-07 domestic season.

The former Warwickshire and Worcestershire batsman, who played eight Test matches and 76 one-day internationals for Australia, spent almost two years in charge of Sri Lanka culminating in an appearance in the 2007 World Cup final.

“I am extremely proud of my involvement with Western Australia cricket as a player and the success we enjoyed as a team throughout the 1980s and 1990s,” said Moody.

“My aim as coach will be to do what I can to help the current crop of Retravision Warriors achieve that same success.

“I am looking forward to working with former team-mates such as Graeme Wood and Justin Langer, two men I was able to share the thrill of winning Sheffield Shield and domestic one-day titles with.”

WACA Chief Executive Officer Graeme Wood added: “This is one of the most significant appointments that the Association has ever made.

“We have been able to secure an internationally respected mentor with an impeccable record and in the prime of his coaching career to take the Retravision Warriors forward.

“Tom is a legend of Western Australia cricket and has led the State to domestic first-class and one-day titles. He brings a wealth of coaching experience after his success with Sri Lanka and Worcestershire, and will command instant respect from the Retravision Warriors squad.

Former Sri Lanka assistant Trevor Penney will be Moody's assistant at the WACA.

“Trevor enjoyed a successful playing career in county cricket, before serving as England’s fielding coach during the 2005 Ashes series, and forging a successful partnership with Tom in Sri Lanka," Wood said.

"He will be another valuable acquisition.”
