Moxon proud of Yorkshire efforts

Director of cricket Martyn Moxon believes Yorkshire can take plenty of positives from their Champions League T20 campaign, despite finishing the tournament proper without a win to their name.

A White Rose team ravaged by injuries lost three out of four group games in South Africa - the other fell victim to the weather - after defeating Uva Next and Trinidad & Tobago to emerge from their qualifying pool.

However, with the exception of an eight-wicket thumping at the hands of Sydney Sixers, Yorkshire coped admirably with the challenge of facing star-studded sides from around the world.

“It’s been a great experience, fantastic to be involved and hopefully the lads have learned a lot,” Moxon told ecb.co.uk following yesterday’s four-wicket loss to Chennai Super Kings.

“I think we can go home from here with our heads held high - to qualify for the competition proper was a great achievement and apart from the Sydney game we have acquitted ourselves well.

Yorkshire did not win a group game in the Champions League T20, but Martyn Moxon said: "We can go home from here with our heads held high - to qualify for the competition proper was a great achievement."

“We’ve been competitive and (it has been a case of) what might have been a couple of times.

“Everybody’s got a lot of good memories and I’m sure it will stand us in good stead for the future.”

Yorkshire were indebted to a counter-attacking 58 from Gary Ballance as they set Chennai 141 to triumph in Durban.

The early dismissals of Francois du Plessis and Murali Vijay gave the county side further hope, but a trio of India internationals then seized the initiative.

Suresh Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni contributed 31 apiece, while Subramaniam Badrinath struck 47 to help the Super Kings win with an over unused.

“We had them in a little bit of trouble, but obviously they have got quality in depth,” Moxon reflected.

“Someone like MS Dhoni coming in, the power of the guy ... sometimes you haven’t got enough runs for somebody like that.

“You look at the quality of the players we’ve been coming up against in the last 10 days or so and it’s phenomenal. You are playing against the best players in the world. For our players, that has got to be a good thing.”

Yorkshire will now enjoy a period of recuperation before beginning their preparations for 2013, when they will be in Division One of the LV= County Championship.

“It’s been a fantastic season for us,” concluded Moxon. “Obviously getting promotion was the main priority from the outset and we have achieved that.

“We’re going to have a bit of a rest now but the lads will be back in December to start training again ahead of an important season next year.”
