Doug Bollinger’s five wickets today put Australia on course for a crushing victory over New Zealand at Wellington’s Basin Reserve in the first Test of two.

The left-arm seamer added to his two victims yesterday to claim a Test-best 5-28 as New Zealand were skittled for 157 in reply to Australia’s 459 for five declared.

When Ricky Ponting enforced the follow-on, Bollinger added another two scalps to end the day with match figures of 7-58.

New Zealand still require another 115 runs to avoid an innings defeat after reaching 187 for five when bad light ended play four overs early.

The hosts’ only bright spot today was 83 for opener Tim McIntosh, who hit 10 fours and a six in his much-needed 220-ball stay.

He appeared set for a second Test century until he fell to Nathan Hauritz shortly before the close, when Daniel Vettori was on 18 and Brendon McCullum four.

It took just 12.1 overs for Australia to wrap up New Zealand’s first innings as the Black Cap batsmen continued to self destruct when they resumed on 108 for four.

Vettori fell to the fifth ball of the day for 46, edging Ryan Harris to Ponting at second slip.

McCullum survived a good lbw shout after the decision review system showed Harris had overstepped, but became Bollinger’s first victim today on 24.

The wicketkeeper-batsman rashly toe-ended a pull to fine-leg where Harris took a fine catch diving forward.

Two balls later Matin Guptill edged the same bowler behind on 30.

Daryl Tuffey was the first of two batsmen to go for nought when Hauritz’s direct hit made him pay for not grounding his bat.

Brent Arnel edged his first ball in Tests, from Bollinger, to Ponting at second slip and Tim Southee nicked Mitchell Johnson behind - a decision upheld on a DRS review - to complete the first-innings debacle.

New Zealand’s openers showed greater resolve second time round, adding 70, before Bollinger trapped BJ Watling in front on 33.

Peter Ingram soon became Bollinger’s seventh scalp of the match when he edged behind.

In the final session, Hauritz had Ross Taylor leg before for 25, despite a review.

McIntosh ploughed on to make his fourth Test fifty – the first in the match for the Black Caps.

However, Guptill’s painstaking stay ended when he edged Hauritz to Katich close in.

McIntosh and Vettori showed some resistance and put on 47 before Hauritz enticed the former to edge to Katich at short-leg late in the day.
