The first Test between New Zealand and South Africa ended in a draw after rain washed out the final day’s play in Dunedin.

The result means the Proteas cannot unseat England as the world’s number one Test side during this series. A 3-0 whitewash to match their one-day international efforts would have done so.

Dunedin rain

New Zealand and South Africa had to settle for a draw after rain washed out the final day's play of the first Test in Dunedin

The outfield was flooded when the umpires made their call to abandon the game. The covers were awash and, with an absence of wind, there was no prospect of any play even if the weather had cleared immediately.

South Africa required eight wickets for victory at the start of the day, while the Black Caps had overnight aspirations of chasing down 401 from their position of 137 for two.

With all results possible, Brendon McCullum, unbeaten on 58, and captain Ross Taylor, 48 not out, were unable to build on their unbroken third-wicket partnership of 82

The second Test begins in Hamilton on Thursday.
