Pakistan announce PCB revamp
The Pakistan government plans to install an ad-hoc committee to oversee administration of the Pakistan Cricket Board following the resignation of chairman Nasim Ashraf.
Ashraf relinquished his post hours after Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, who was facing impeachment by Parliament, announced his decision to step down on national television.
Musharraf was also patron of the PCB and had handpicked Ashraf to lead the organisation in October 2006.
The PCB constitution states only the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan can be patron of the board and Musharraf's term was automatically terminated once he quit as President.
Sports Minister Najmuddin Khan revealed an ad-hoc committee would be formed shortly and will likely to be headed by a former Test cricketer.
"Our first priority is to appoint the ad-hoc committee to take over administration of the board," he said.
"The committee will also probe allegations of corruption and misuse of funds in the PCB.
"We will carry out a proper audit of the accounts, tally spending and we will fire those people who are found to have misused funds or power."
Khan, however, indicated the government was considering the option of asking Ashraf to continue as chairman until the completion of the Champions Trophy.
The eight-nation tournament is scheduled to be held in Pakistan from September 12 to 28.
"We may ask Ashraf to continue until the end of the Champions Trophy as we are working at long term plans," added Khan.
"The ad-hoc committee will also work to revise the constitution and also recommend name of next chairman.
“In all probability we will have a former player at the top now.”
