Kamran Akmal and Younus Khan boosted Pakistan's hopes of salvaging a draw after four days of the second Test against South Africa in Lahore.

At the close, their unbroken partnership for the second wicket stood at 93, and Pakistan were 108 for one - needing a further 349 to win the match and square the two-Test series.

Earlier in the day, centuries from Graeme Smith and Jaques Kallis allowed South Africa to declare on 305 for four, setting the hosts an unlikely 457 for victory.

The tourists got an early breakthrough when Makhaya Ntini had Salman Butt caught at slip for six, but that proved to be the only wicket of the session.

The efforts of Smith and Kallis enabled South Africa to declare at tea.

Captain Smith made 133 before falling to Danish Kaneria, while Kallis was unbeaten on 107 when the tourists called a halt to their second innings.

The pair began the day on 152 for two and managed just 59 runs before lunch.

The 100 partnership came up off 230 balls, Kallis surviving a scare three runs short of his 50 when he was dropped by Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik.

Smith reached a hard-fought 254-ball century before lunch but was eventually dismissed with the third-wicket stand worth 207 when he was caught by substitute fielder Yasir Hameed at backward point.

Ashwell Prince was bowled by slow left-armer Abdur Rehman, but Kallis went to his 27th Test century - and his third in four innings - overtaking Inzamam-ul-Haq and Javed Miandad in the process to become the ninth highest Test run-scorer of all time.

Pakistan vice-captain Butt was later fined 50 per cent of his match fee for publicly criticising umpiring decisions in this match.
