An unbeaten century by Shivnarine Chanderpaul could not save West Indies from a 24-run defeat in the second one-day international against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi and the loss of the series.

The veteran left-hander struck 107 not out as the Windies attempted to overhaul their opponents' 232 but they came up short as they could not score fast enough in the closing overs, eventually being bowled out with seven balls remaining.

Misbah-ul-Haq's half-century had helped Pakistan to their competitive total after they had been reduced to 87 for four.

Although he was easily outscored by Chanderpaul, the rest of the Caribbean team failed to make a contribution.

The loss of openers Chris Gayle and Sewnarine Chattergoon, both without scoring, left Windies in deep trouble at 14 for two in the fifth over.

However, Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan turned things around with a stand of 92 in 23 overs.

Sarwan was eventually trapped lbw by Shahid Afridi for 45, having hit four fours in his 64-ball stay at the crease.

From that point it was all about Chanderpaul as of the remaining seven batsmen only Nikita Miller (12) made double figures.

The left-hander hit six fours in 149 balls but as his partners failed to make an impact the pressure - and run-rate - began to increase.

With four overs remaining West Indies required 37 with three wickets in hand but a wicket and only two off the over cost them dearly and even Chanderpaul's heroics could not recover the situation as Umar Gul claimed two crucial late wickets.

Misbah was the hero for Pakistan as he prevented a poor early start from deteriorating further and Kamran Akmal, Afridi and Sohail Tanvir ensured they posted a competitive total.

Daren Powell's dismissal of Khurram Manzoor and Younis Khan, after Jerome Taylor had removed Salman Butt in the second over, had put them in some difficulty but Misbah rescued them with a workmanlike 52 off 88 balls, which included just one four.

His dismissal to Miller could have sparked a lower-order collapse at 125 for five but Akmal and Afridi shared a crucial stand of 52.

Akmal eventually went for 45 off 54 balls, again with just one boundary, in the 41st over and Afridi followed nine balls later to Taylor for a trademark quickfire 28 off 26 deliveries, which included the first six of the innings.

Tanvir upped the run-rate, striking four fours in an equally-rapid 26 off 20 balls, but when he was removed in the 48th over it was left to Umar Gul to hit 13 off 12 before Pakistan were dismissed with one over of their allocation remaining.

Taylor finished with 3-38 and Powell took 3-50.
