Patel and Franklin earn Black Caps call-ups
Warwickshire spinner Jeetan Patel has been called into New Zealand’s squad for their Test tour of India with Daniel Vettori sidelined due to a groin problem.
Vettori suffered the injury in in the first Test of the Black Caps' recent 2-0 defeat to West Indies.
In the other alteration from the 15-man squad that travelled to the Caribbean all-rounder James Franklin replaces batsman Dean Brownlie, who had a top score of 35 in four innings against Darren Sammy’s men.
Patel has 38 LV=County Championship wickets at 23.65 for title-chasing Warwickshire this season and could line-up alongside leg-break bowler Tarun Nethula if conditions are spin-friendly as anticipated.
"Unfortunately Daniel Vettori won't recover in time for the Test series but his injury has created an opportunity for Jeetan Patel to come back into the side,” said New Zealand’s national selection manager Kim Littlejohn. “Jeetan has been in great from for Warwickshire and deserves his opportunity.
"James Franklin has been brought into the squad to bolster the batting. He brings a lot of experience and knowledge of playing in Indian conditions which will be invaluable.
“Dean Brownlie misses out on selection. We continue to see him as a player of the future but at this stage we feel he needs to works on parts of his game.”
The two-Test series gets under way in Hyderabad on August 23.
