Pakistan have received mixed injury news ahead of the World Cup with fast bowler Umar Gul declared fit but all-rounder Abdul Razzaq ruled out of the tournament with a knee problem.
Gul’s all-clear is a major boost to the side as the 24-year-old had been a major doubt for the tournament, but Razzaq’s absence comes as an unanticipated blow.
Razzaq did not take part in a recent training camp as he was suffering from a fever, but he has sustained a knee injury and been advised to rest for at least three weeks.
Azhar Mahmood, one of Pakistan’s reserves, has been given the green light to replace the 27-year-old in the Caribbean.
Pakistan, however, still have injury concerns over fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif.
The pair are expected to return to the country on Wednesday after travelling to England for medical check-ups on their respective injuries.
A Pakistan Cricket Board medical commission supervised a series of tests on the other World Cup squad players on Monday, with experts confirming their satisfaction with fitness levels shown by the players.
