Debutant Kyle Abbott’s astonishing display left South Africa on the verge of a 3-0 Test-series whitewash against Pakistan.

The Proteas are shorn of the services of injured paceman Morne Morkel in Centurion, yet that mattered little as Abbott starred.

He claimed incredible figures of 7-29, with Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn also impressing as Pakistan were dismissed for 156.

That left them 253 short of the 409 posted by South Africa, who duly enforced the follow-on.

Steyn then continued the Proteas’ outstanding day by bowling Mohammad Hafeez with the first ball of the tourists’ second innings; they subsequently reached 14 for one.

Earlier, AB de Villiers, having resumed on 98, quickly moved beyond three figures, striking 121.

Vernon Philander also hit 78, while Rahat Ali starred for the tourists by claiming 6-127 in just his second appearance.

All eyes this morning were on de Villiers, who brought up his century in the day’s second over with a three into the off side.

Philander was then reprieved as Sarfraz Ahmed tipped a chance for four that moved him to 49; he brought up his fifty with a single in the next over.

He punished Pakistan briefly, striking a couple more boundaries before being caught at slip off Younus Khan.

Rahat then finished off the innings, having de Villiers taken in the deep and Rory Kleinveldt at mid-on prior to bowling Abbott.

Pakistan made a solid start as Imran Farhat and Hafeez put on 46 for the first wicket, albeit having been troubled – including the former overturning an lbw verdict.

However, the Decision Review System did not come to Farhat's aid as Philander trapped him plumb in front for 30 – after which Abbott had Hafeez taken at gully.

Pakistan’s problems worsened as Philander bowled Azhar Ali via an inside edge and Steyn pinned Asad Shafiq lbw, before Abbott took centre stage.

As if to show the true depth of South Africa’s bowling, it seemed inevitable he would star – and so it proved.

The tall seamer had Sarfraz and Saeed Ajmal taken at first slip, Ehsan Adil at third and Mohammad Irfan at fourth before ousting Younus leg before.
