Lonwabo Tsotsobe has been left out of South Africa’s Test party to tour Australia.

The left-armer was an unused squad member as the Proteas defeated England 2-0 this summer to take over at the summit of the International Cricket Council Test rankings.

He has now been omitted in favour of Cape Cobras all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt, who has two Twenty20 caps to his name.

Kleinveldt hit the headlines for the wrong reasons earlier this year when he admitted to using cannabis.

Convenor of selectors Andrew Hudson said: “It is tough luck for Lopsy (Tsotsobe) to miss out but we just feel that Rory's ability to hit the deck hard will give us a valuable option, particularly at Brisbane and Perth.

“He also adds batting depth to the lower order. The fact that he finished second on last season's four-day bowling averages behind only Vernon Philander speaks for itself and he continued his form for the South Africa A side at home to Sri Lanka and away in Ireland.”

There is no place in the squad for Albie Morkel or Marchant de Lange, but Thami Tsolekile is retained as wicketkeeping cover.

South Africa squad to tour Australia: Graeme Smith (captain), Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Francois du Plessis, Imran Tahir, Jacques Kallis, Rory Kleinveldt, Morne Morkel, Alviro Petersen, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Jacques Rudolph, Dale Steyn, Thami Tsolekile.
