Samaraweera profits from Mahela misfortune
Thilan Samaraweera has been called into Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the home series against Bangladesh after Mahela Jayawardene was forced to withdraw due to a finger injury.
Jayawardene, who recently handed the Test and one-day international captaincy to Angelo Mathews, dislocated the middle finger in his left hand while attempting a catch during a first-class fixture this weekend.
Scans subsequently revealed a chip had come loose from the bone and he is therefore expected to be out for four to six weeks.
That has led Sri Lanka to send for Samaraweera, who was left out of the initial 20-man party on the day his move to Worcestershire was announced.
The first of two Tests with Bangladesh begins on March 8, with three one-day internationals and two Twenty20s to follow.
